Sony PlayStation 5 is about to arrive, so many gamers wonder… Is it still worth buying a PlayStation 4 in 2019?
After all, the 'old lady' console hit the market about 6 years ago. So, however, Sony has already begun to share a lot of key information about what we can find in the next generation of consoles.
- PlayStation 5 – Everything we already know about the console!
Still, the end of a console generation cycle… It's almost always a great time to buy a console! In this case, a PlayStation 4.
Briefly, not only did the console become (much) cheaper, it also got a lot better, thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of studios that pushed tools and hardware to the limit. Not to mention the excellent library of games available.
- (Opinion) PS5 and Xbox Scarlett should look at Nintendo Switch
Is it still worth buying a Sony PlayStation 4 in 2019?
So if you've never had a PlayStation 4 at home, or have the original model… Be aware, a lot has changed in recent years! Firstly, we have the PS4 Slim, which is smaller, fresher and clearer, cheaper than the original PlayStation 4. However, if we forget the faster Wi-Fi, it's basically the same experience.
Later we have the PS4 Pro! That is undoubtedly a major upgrade from the original console. After all, with this console you will be able to play some titles at 1440p or even 4K.
Which brings us to the price of PS4 consoles in 2019. Something at least interesting
Interestingly, unlike what happened in past generations, prices have not come down that much in recent years! Since the PS4 Slim costs only ~ 100 € less than the original model at the time of its release. And of course, the PS4 Pro is significantly more expensive, costing around 399 euros. (Not counting promotions)
Of course here we can go to the used market, where you will surely find several models in different states of conservation. But when it comes to hardware, I'm not the biggest fan of this kind of market, to say the least, when several vendors pop their consoles at prices that don't really make sense.
Still, sometimes it is possible to find good deals. This is something you should consider if you are interested in purchasing one of these consoles.
If you don't know, PlayStation 4 is the winner of the current generation of consoles!
With 100 million units sold, PlayStation 4 is probably (arguably) the best place to play. Which turns out to be quite interesting considering the last generation, when PS3 had noticeable difficulties in its rivalry with the Xbox 360.
- PS5 will be 4x more powerful than PS4 Pro! Is 4K possible?
If you don't know, in terms of technical specifications, the PlayStation 3 was the top console. But because it was extremely complex, the studios eventually preferred the Microsoft console, which was noticeable in the quality of the games that were released for both machines.
That said, Sony learned from the mistakes it made on PS3, and decided to bet strong and ugly on its PS4.
With all this in mind, Sony has decided to make the PlayStation 4 a simple and super gaming console. Betting on powerful but 'friendly' hardware for devs. Thus, the successor of PS3 not only managed to be far more powerful than its rival Xbox One, it was again the choice of programmers.
(Taking advantage of a number of mistakes Microsoft made when launching ‘One’)
- PlayStation 4 vs Xbox One: How did Sony recover from the PS3 fiasco?
So the vast majority of games that were released for both current-generation consoles run at 1080p on PS4, but only 720p on Xbox One! In addition, there is sometimes a noticeable drop in image quality in Xbox One games.
PS4 Pro vs Xbox One X – On 'Pro' models, things have changed a bit! Microsoft now has the advantage… But Sony exclusives eventually nullified this performance boost
With the release of the ‘Pro’ consoles, Microsoft decided to focus on performance, putting the PS4 Pro in the background. However, here comes Sony's second big advantage… Its exclusive! Where we can include God of War, Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted, The Last of Us, etc… Which are in fact some of the best games of the current generation!
Something that Microsoft intends to solve with the launch of the Xbox Scarlett, as we can see from the massive number of studios that now belong to the American giant's boards. But for now, it remains a Win for Sony. By the way, you can find many of these games for under 20 €.
Conclusion: Is it worth buying a PS4 in 2019?
In my opinion yes. After all, you can take a PS4, and immediately get your hands on a number of quality games. Which undoubtedly deserve to be played, whether there is a PS5 on the way or not.
Still, if you are buying a new console now, Xbox One is also an excellent choice. Also because it is almost always with brutal discounts, bringing 1 or more very interesting games. Not to mention the backward compatibility which is a very well endowed effort by Microsoft.
