In case you didn't know, AMD and GlobalFoundries were very close partners in the very recent past. (At the end of the day, GlobalFoundries' production lines are essentially AMD's lines. The problem is that the second was forced to sell everything it had to avoid broken banking).
That said, recently AMD has been much closer to TSMC, thanks to its 7nm and 7nm EUV lines, which of course has been a dent in the former partner GlobalFoundries. However, it looks like GloFo may end up winning a millionaire contract, interestingly from AMD's rival… Intel!
- Intel vs AMD: Welcome to the processor core war!
Intel is planning to use former AMD partner to increase production!
Therefore, according to some industry sources, Intel is trying to increase its production of 14nm products, to try to meet all demand.
After all, it was the company itself that went public to say that it underestimated the demand for this type of products, and promised to do everything in its power to return to the super competitive levels that it has always defined. And apparently, the solution is to hire GlobalFoundries.
Which ends up making some sense, since GlobalFoundries has given up on investing in more recent and advanced processes, and has a 14nm process in its catalog! Intel's favorite, as it has been launching products based on this technology for as long as 6 years.
So it is now speculated that GloFo will start producing Celeron, Pentium and Core i3 products, so that Intel can concentrate only and only on the most powerful Core i5, i7, i9 and Xeon! (At the same time preparing the supernumbered 10nm)
Of course, all this is still rumors and leaks … But one thing is certain, having Intel connected to AMD's former partner would be really curious and above all funny.
