A simple long shot from Simon Mignolet was treated badly by United and Emmanuel Dennis fired into the net, hitting Sergio Romero.
The visitors offered almost nothing offensive in the first half before a mistake by Brandon Mechele inviting Anthony Martial to pass one on one and pass former Liverpool goalkeeper Mignolet.
The Belgian goalkeeper made another martial effort for the post before the break, while the Red Devils were cheering up.
But Brugge was largely the better side in the second half, although he failed to find a second goal with Odilon Kossounou guilty of wasting a chance.
United failed to create clear chances, but a 1-1 draw still leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men in charge.
Express Sport classifies United players after their indifferent performance at Jan Breydel Stadium.
Man Utd player ratings against Club Brugge – Europa League
Sergio Romero – 4
Usually impressive as the club's defense, he was well defeated by Dennis's move when he got off the line, but he was too slow to find the ball.
Some good stops after that, particularly negating the marker from an angle with the feet, but the mistake ended up hurting his night.
Diogo Dalot – 5
Bad attempt to challenge Dennis in the first half, which forced Romero's defense and defended Bruges' goal.
Good ball for Lingard in the second half, but the midfielder attacked. It's not good enough on the right side.
Victor Lindelof – 4
The header of the great defense denied Brugge a goal in two minutes, but from then on he was bad.
He fought throughout the game with many missed passes.
Harry Maguire – 5
Quite easily defeated by chance and Romero had the chance to reunite after missing a header with Percy Tau trying to cross United's bottom line.
He had a tough battle against Dennis and was well transformed by the striker for a late chance from Brugge wasted by Kossounou.
Luke Shaw – 6
One of United's best players in his left-back role.
New position gave new life to his career at Red Devils.
Brandon Wiliams – 5
Nowhere near Dennis for Brugge's opening game and he fought defensively, especially in the first half.
He fired high and wide from a low Pereira cross before the break. Well below your recent standards.
Nemanja Matic – 5
He overcame several times in the first half and endeavored to offer a lot of security in his title role.
Although he saw a lot of ball, disappointed by the lack of movement of his teammates.
Andreas Pereira – 4
He saw a low kick saved by Mignolet and rolled another one a few meters wide from the edge of the area, but not enough to advance. Reserved.
Juan Mata – 5
Anonymous in the first semester, but better in the second.
It is still very slow with your decision making in possession, however.
Jesse Lingard – 4
A long shot from a Dalot cross, just after the break, but otherwise he may not be on the pitch in the first or second half, making too little of the score bar, firing a stop shot directly at Mignolet's hands.
Lucky to last the full 90.
Anthony Martial – 7
Excellent race and submission from nothing, taking advantage of a defensive error. He hit the post soon after, with Mignolet kicking the post.
He chose to be altruistic and feed Mata in the area when, undoubtedly, he should have kicked the goal.
Surprisingly, he replaced Ighalo with more than 20 minutes remaining, perhaps with United's next game schedule in mind.
Odion Ighalo (for Martial, 67) – 5
Scorer replaced Martial. He didn't see much of the game.
Fred (for Pereira, 71) – 5
He won a free kick at the entrance to the area, otherwise not involved.
Bruno Fernandes (in favor of Dalot, 80) – 6
He saw a final shot blocked while a 25-yard free kick could only hit the wall, but United improved offensively in their short participation.
