Xiaomi has unveiled a new phone that appears to have been looking for a folding smartphone maker. The device is called Mi Mix Alpha and is the first Mi Mix to have a “Surround Screen” that literally surrounds the body of the smartphone. Yes, the screen is on the front of the product, on the side and continues towards the back of the product.

The company claims the screen / body ratio is 180.6%, and the parts not covered by a screen – the top and bottom of the phone – are made of aeronautical grade titanium that is apparently lighter than stainless steel, This shows that Xiaomi is betting heavily on this equipment.

Although the defining feature of the phone is an immersive screen, it has another outstanding feature: a 108 megapixel camera that can capture photos with a resolution of 12,032 × 9,024 pixels. The other sensors are a 20 megapixel ultra wide angle camera with 1.5 cm super macro features as well as a 12 megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and dual PD focus.

However, the device does not have a front camera, as the smartphone has a rear screen allowing the camera to be used for selfies. The disadvantage is a black band in which the camera is mounted passes vertically through the device, making the rear screen slightly smaller than the front screen.

As the phone is almost a full screen, it only has one physical button (on / off at the top) and has pressure sensitive sides. Its other components are also hidden underneath the screen, including the fingerprint reader and an acoustic technology that replaces the typical headset and speaker. And, like its Mi Mix predecessor, Alpha also uses ultrasound for proximity detection.

Inside the device, the smartphone has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor, 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The equipment already has 5G for China's three major carriers and comes with a 4.050mAh battery with a 40W fast charging capacity. Although the Mi Mix Alpha may seem like a concept or prototype, Xiaomi guarantees it is already in “small-scale production” and will be launched in December, not mentioning if the equipment will be for sale outside China.

Surely you won't be surprised at the price at which the smartphone will hit the market: 19,999 yuan, about 2565 euros or $ 11,670. If confirmed, the price of this device is higher than the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
