There was no doubt that 2020 will be the year of 5G communications, and this step is confirmed by processor manufacturers already integrating 5G modems. Qualcomm's new high-end processor is now announced, the Snapdragon 865 which will be the processor of the 2020 high-end. The big news is that it will bring to all 5G, which although not yet integrated into the processor, the 5G modem will be “required” and the US manufacturer will not sell any processor without the 5G modem.
Snapdragon 865 promises to have 25% faster CPU performance (and 25% better CPU power efficiency) and graphics will be 20% faster (and 35% more GPU power efficient) compared to the Snapdragon 855 predecessor.
CPU gains are mainly achieved through the use of ARM Cortex-A77 performance cores (the 855 used the A76). That said, the CPU configuration is pretty much the same, with equal clock speeds remaining unchanged between generations. Therefore, there is still a Prime core (marketed as Kryo 585) with a frequency of 2.84 GHz, three performance cores (Kryo 585) with a frequency of 2.4 GHz, and 4 Kryo 385 efficiency cores (based on Cortex-A55). with a frequency of 1.8 GHz.
This new processor features the new Adreno 650 GPU, which supports 144Hz (or UHD 60Hz) QHD + displays. ISP Spectra 480 supports up to 200 MP (or 64 MP zero shutter) main cameras or up to 25 MP dual cameras, 60fps 4K HDR video capture with 64MP burst images, or 120 fps or 8K 64MP or 4K burst images 30 fps as well as 720p video capture at 960fps.
Not integrated with the processor but part of the vendor package is the X55 modem, providing 4G and 5G connectivity, reaching theoretical maximum download speeds of 7.5Gbps at 5G and 2.5Gbps at 4G (and 3Gbps and 316Mbps, respectively). It supports 5G networks as well as sub-6 and mmWave developments.
Snapdragon 865 is Wi-Fi 6 certified and supports Bluetooth 5.1, aptX TWS, aptX Adaptive and aptX Voice. The Hexagon 698 Accelerator and Tensor feature a 5th generation artificial intelligence engine that doubles the performance of its predecessor.
