Review of the Razer Kraken Ultimate Tournament Edition: A gaming headset

Razer is a well-known gaming goods brand founded 20 years ago, and manufactures from keyboards to backpacks and many other items. But where Razer stands out the most is undoubtedly in gaming headsets. In today's article, we bring an analysis to the Razer Kraken Ultimate Tournament Edition headphones that include a number of extra features, thanks to the THX Espacial Audio sound card, designed mainly for those who like to play as a team.

One of the things I liked the most, in addition to the quality of the sound and the microphone, was also the fact that they are the most comfortable headsets I have ever tried, as they are covered with a synthetic and soft fabric that isolates the sound and the part upper is also padded so as not to feel pressure on the head.

They are headsets that maximize comfort, so my experience so far has been very good, because the audio is excellent and the microphone is the best, so I spent a few hours (practically all day)) with them, in addition, as they are made of aluminum, their weight is reduced, approximately 322 grams, so during games I didn't even notice them.

As for the design, it is simple, on the sides we have the Razer logo and on the headband it has Razer on it, and the microphone is also retractable, so it can be stored.

Space THX audio and sound quality

We can say that Razer Kraken Ultimate headphones can be used in two ways: directly through the connector and through the THX Spatial Audio sound card that connects via USB to the computer, so I recommend that if you use them on your computer, connect them using this last option.

The technical characteristics of sound are as follows:

  • Frequency response: 12 Hz – 28 kHz.
  • Impedance: 32 Ω at 1 kHz.
  • 1 kHz sensitivity: 109.
  • Input power: 30 mW (max.).
  • Controllers: 50 mm, with neodymium magnets.

The audio quality is very good, and it allows a very respectable maximum volume, but I do not recommend that you keep it at maximum for a long period of time. The treble and bass have a good balance, with more power in the bass in the standard settings, but we can adjust the bass using the THX adapter, if we like them more or less strongly.

The sound reproduced by the Razer Kraken Ultimate headphones is very clear, both in video games, as well as playing multimedia content and even chatting with friends while we are playing. There is no noise, no sound or irregularity from one headset to the other.

On devices such as the PlayStation 4 or the smartphone, which are connected only by connecting the connector, this clarity is maintained, although the volume level is not so high and we lose the benefits of the THX Espacial Audio adapter.

But, it is due to this sound card that the Razer Kraken Tournament Edition reaches its full potential, including very interesting functions, such as:

  • Bass leveling
  • Game / chat volume adjustment
  • Surround sound (can be configured)
  • Sound normalization (can be configured)

For me, the most important thing is surround sound, because in addition to being a totally different experience with multimedia content, it is a very good advantage in video games, especially in those where, by sound, we can know where our enemy is or if he is approaching- if and we can anticipate it.

Razer Synapse

Unlike peripherals such as the mouse and keyboard, Razer Kraken Tournament Edition headsets have very simple settings in the application.

First, we found a demo of surround and stereo sound, which serves to give us an idea of the differences and to test the surround sound. In the mixer section, we can activate surround or stereo sound through the application, which is very useful, as we are not always interested in having it activated. In addition we can adjust the sound with the 7 surround levels, in case we are not comfortable with the standards.

There are two improvements in audio, normalization of sound and clarity of voice. Personally, I don't have any activated, I also tried to normalize the sound and it works well, they keep more or less the same volume, regardless of the sounds that may appear suddenly during games, such as explosions. The clarity of the voice is perhaps the only thing I do not recommend that it be activated, as everything is already heard very well, and this option if activated in a very loud environment can make the voices look like strange sounds.

In addition they also have an equalizer so that we can adjust to our taste or we can use the pre-defined settings.

Overall, the audio is quite good thanks to THX Espacial Audio, as the adapter itself allows you to mute the microphone or increase and decrease the volume, and in the settings we can also adjust the volume of the game's bass and enable or disable surround sound with just a button.

The microphone has been improved over the previous version, providing a response frequency between 100 Hz and 10 kHz, but with a sensitivity greater than -45 ± 3 dB and also a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 60 dB. The pickup pattern remains the same, unidirectional ECM.

We are facing a Razer Kraken headphone with an analog connection, which is always the first option for professional players, since the sound signal comes directly from the sound card of our motherboard.

Razen Kraken Torunamet Edition headphones have a retractable microphone, with the following technical specifications:

  • Frequency response: 100 Hz – 10 kHz.
  • Impedance: 32 Ω at 1 kHz.
  • Signal to noise ratio:> 60 dB.
  • 1 kHz sensitivity: -45 ± 3 dB.
  • Pickup pattern: unidirectional ECM microphone arm.

Undoubtedly, the microphone is another positive point in these headphones, which can be summed up in one word: quality.

They have an excellent elimination of noise and allow various adjustments through synapse among which are included:

  • Microphone volume
  • Microphone sensitivity: determines the microphone's entry point to eliminate ambient noise or increase what it captures.
  • Local noise: used to hear the microphone without intensification.
  • Volume normalization: always try to maintain the same volume level to avoid that, if, for example, in the game you are killed and shouted, you do not leave your friends deaf.
  • Ambient noise reduction: processes audio more and eliminates ambient noise as much as possible.
  • Vocal clarity: I do not recommend using this option, as it is not necessary if the sound is loud, as it ends up looking strange.

In addition to using it on the PC, where the performance is excellent, I also used the Razen Kraken Torunamet Edition headphones with the microphone on PS4, and while playing games with my friends, I must say that the experience was positive, but it is necessary to decrease the volume of the microphone on the console, but the result is a very clear voice, with no background noise, and that is what matters when playing.

Finally, I would like to inform you that we can connect them to a multitude of devices, as they have the two connections: USB and Jack (3.5 mm). The jack cable measures 1.3 m, but with the THX adapter an additional 2 meters of cable are added. But if you want to take advantage of their full potential, it is best to connect them to a PC, as the control buttons are available, both on the headphones and when connected with a USB adapter, we can adjust the volume on any device we connect to .

Verdict: Razer Kraken Ultimate Tournament Edition

We tested these headphones for several days, both in games and listening to music at 320 Kbps and, of course, we tested with the microphone. We must say that the Razer Kraken Ultimate Tournament Edition headphones have excellent sound quality, and we do not need any software or simulated surround sound to be able to enjoy a clean and very balanced stereo sound in medium, low and high tones.

Razer headphones have always been characterized by their bass, very excessive in many cases. But this was corrected in this model, even with loud sound it becomes clear without interrupting the bass or treble.

With a robust aluminum frame, comfortable materials, good audio quality and a good microphone, we can't ask for more. In addition, this model is more geared towards team games, with the possibility of adjustments in audio, and with surround sound, make them the right choice for gaming at a very competitive price and with the sound quality that a player needs to enjoy the games without having to spend excessive.

I recommend the Razer Kraken Ultimate Tournament Edition headphones, so you are thinking about changing the headsets and making a good investment, the Razer Kraken Ultimate Tournament Edition is an excellent choice.
